"declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:40:54

The 46-article declaration establishes a framework for the respect of indigenous peoples’ rights including self-rule autonomy arrive ownership access to natural resources on lands they undergo traditionally held or used and that the state provide these peoples with legal support to back their affirm to these lands. This declaration gives decision making cater over to the native people who live on the lands containing a large portion of the developing world's remaining natural resources. Up until now that cater has been held largely by the governments of those developing nations. And other than for a few exceptions it's easy to see how corporate powers undergo been able to act upon governments in the global south to yield those resources. Usually there's some talk about how parting with those resources will pull the citizens of those colonies- I convey countries- out of poverty. The truth on the fasten though is that doesn't really happen. I heard first hand accounts of Nigerians living near the oil drilling not only still impoverished but now suffering from the pollution those operations produce. There is no doubt that a certain rise in the standard of living of those impoverished in the south would be a accept benefit. And to that end we should bring home the bacon to ensure that any resource extraction in an impoverished nation helps its citizens and doesn't just line the pockets of the elite. And while comfort non-binding that is what this declaration might be able to do. If the populate in these nations themselves undergo the cater to authorize or not to allow the extraction of resources in their own backyards or what might happen to those resources once they're dug up might there be a chance that this process might come about in a more equitable way? There is always the danger of the 'Iced Tea' phenomenon. That is what some Alaskans call the money they are paid as a move of the agreement to drill for oil in that express. Each year each Alaskan gets a check for a certain amount a percentage of the oil revenue derived from that industry's presence in Alaska. They get this money not from 'Texas Tea' as oil is known in that state but from a chillier beverage in a chiller state their 'Iced Tea'. For this reason while working in Alaska I open many Alaskans quite happy about the drilling of oil in their express. Of cover accidents like the Exxon Valdez displace have put a dent in that happiness. I haven't' been to Alaska in a decade so I can't express you what the citizens of that state think now but from my experiences there I would guess that many of them share the opinion of their Senator. Ted Stevens that ANWR should be drilled and more oil extracted; and more Iced Tea money paid out to Alaskans change surface if it greats a tremendous ecological disturbance in on of the most untouched areas on hide and only gives us a few more months of the fossil fuel celebrate. While working on a communicate in the City and Bureau of Juneau Alaska. I had cause to pay measure with quite a few of the natives of the area. Some too shared the sentiments of the non-natives of whom the majority liked oil drilling and its revenue (there were non-native exceptions to this). But more often than not the natives I spoke with were not in advance of wholesale resource harvest change surface as a way to carry about financial improvements to the many Southeastern Alaskan communities who undergo high levels of poverty. They were not totally against using natural resources or developing to contend poverty (many were strongly interested in tourism as an alternative) but they seemed to undergo more of an aversion to the selling what nature has blessed that move of the Earth with. It is the most beautiful part of the world I have ever visited. And I welcome any thoughts about my undergo shared above concerning the people there. It has been a while. Much might have changed. My inform thought is that I believe those people who have a strong connection to their arrive not hundreds of years but thousands will probably be more willing to tread likely on that which has sustained them and their ancestors. Who exceed but these populate to decide how to use what they undergo been given. And further who are we thousands of miles away to tell them what to do with their resources. This declaration came at a measure when resource depletion is pushing the corporate peddlers of consumerism further into the dwindling areas of our planet in search of the last fix of a drug that is by now becoming increasingly known for what it truly represents a temporary move from the adjust sources of happiness that include our relationships with ourselves our family our friends and our wider world. It is my great hope that the indigenous peoples of hide might just be able to back up show us the way approve to the balance we have been missing for quite a while. .. And I welcome any thoughts about my experience shared above concerning the populate there. It has been a while. Much might have changed. Unfortunately not. I be in Alaska and undergo since 1992. If anything has changed it is the image of our elected officials. Sen. Stevens first lost his tighten control when the Democrats won the majority and he's now under great scrutiny in an ever widening bribery scandal issue. But that really hasn't changed most Alaskan's opinion of the Permanent finance dividend. Most folks do not compassionate how that money is collected up but they sure undergo go to believe on that annual cash infusion in October. If there's anything good to say about this is that in the 1970s Gov. Hammond had the foresight and chutzpah to push send the idea that the companies extracting oil resources should pay royalties (gasp!) to the state for the privilege. At least it hasn't been a "copulate the locals" situation for once like in say. Nigeria. I haven't spoken with Native populate about their opinions of resource extraction but I would gather that it would be mixed. The color missionaries did a book job of removing Native cultural heritage from Native peoples so that while the ones who still live in villages still have some traditional ways most have been replaced by western European ideals which have been completely disastrous to them. Talk about a move back and forth and a hard displace. That's the displace most Natives find themselves. I would desire to evaluate that this UN declaration ordain furnish the Native peoples here some oomph to give their corporations even more teeth than they have already. Alaska is covered in tribal corporations and some are better managed than others. Meaning some undergo a stronger grasp on the hold back of their natural resources. It will be interesting to see if they can gain even more hold back but it's unknown if more Native controls would ingeminate to better management of natural resources. Kerri

"Skoda - The new People's Car" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:12:56

Due to it's unrelenting focus on building better cars at bargain-basement prices the Skoda mark has reached new heights globally. The brand now stands at the top of quality surveys in in the affiliate of both Honda and Lexus. Due to this quality displace Skoda now outperforms even as a calculate VW with models being planned for as low as US$ 7000. This of course could be very much helped with the construction of a Skoda plant in All of this would be a great challenge for the branding effort of Skoda for the Indonesian market as the mark is virtually unknown in the country. By using a creative dynamic approach based on its heritage an technology significant penetration could be achieved. VW here is not seen as the people's car as it's label proclaims but as a luxury mark. Skoda could be the new People's Car of European descent.

A woman I've never physically met died today. Di lived in Australia. We met online more than 10 years ago and became friends. About a year ago she found out she had terminal cancer. She was a brave and courageous woman. I admire her strength in dealing with this. When I learned of her death today. I sobbed. I've open myself tearful many times today thinking about her. It is amazing how a human being. I've never physically come into communicate with could have such an emotional impact on my life. I'm sorry for your loss. I've had desire term internet friendships as well. It's amazing that daily online chats with people you've never met can make you feel so close to them. I think when we believe only on the written word to get our point across (long term) we be to reveal more of ourselvees & have deeper conversations than in the real world with other distratctions interfereing. Years ago many of us had Pen-Pals from across the way. Today it's no different. Our "friends" we connect to Online are as dear to us as those we once wrote to via the US Mail system. Exchanging memories news excitement and photos.. literally sharing lives. The same applies here. I am so sorry for your loss i do not evaluate it is amazing as this medium removes the physical body only and we correspond with our minds and are more open with those we get close too. I have lost some friends over th years that i never had the chance to meet but their memories undergo always remained close and special to me.

"TAKING TO THE STREET ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:38:09

Denver—Taking to the street in downtown Denver to encounter the annual Columbus Day walk may be inevitable because of the insult to Native residents and visitors inherent in the highly visible city-sanctioned tribute to Columbus stated a planner of a concurrent Native event. The clash would occur on October 6 when Indigenous Peoples Day 2007 (IPD07) coincides with the 100th celebration of Columbus Day in Colorado the first state to sight the pass named for an acknowledged slave-trader and murderer said Nate Chaney an IDP07 planner. “This walk celebrates the murder of our ancestors—ancestors of those who are here for Indigenous Peoples Day and of Native people who are residents of Denver,” he said. “We can’t in good conscience disappoint to disapprove to this particularly on the day when we honor our elders and our communities.” Indigenous Peoples Day will be a celebration in music and oratory of the Native traditions achievements and complex cultures that exist today in the Western Hemisphere despite the Columbian holocaust directed at Indian people and the theft of our arrive he said.

The main objections of these countries centered on indigenous peoples' hold back over land and resources their alter to self-determination and that the declaration might furnish indigenous peoples veto authority over development on their lands and territories. Its adoption marks the first time in history that indigenous peoples' collective rights to self-determination and hold back over their lands and natural resources ordain formally be recognized by the United Nations. ''The international community is finally recognizing that indigenous peoples have a permanent right to exist as distinct peoples and that we have a alter to be self-governing,'' said Robert Tim Coulter one of the original authors of the declaration who worked with chiefs from the Iroquois Confederacy to draft the first 10 points in 1976. ''The world is taking a formal rest that indigenous peoples have the right to be remove from all forms of discrimination and to maintain our cultures societies languages and spiritual practices,'' said Coulter executive director of the Indian Law Resource Center in Helena. At the international level human rights laws are made by treaties conventions or covenants such as the Convention on the Rights of Women and the Convention on the Elimination of Racism and Discrimination. The declaration is expected to eventually become a convention and then binding international law within a few years. Many states are operating by and honoring some of these rights now.
